Story of the exhibit

A hearse built on the basis of a JerAZ-762 van. It was first used in Viljandi, most recently by Leida Käär's funeral parlour. Later it passed to the Karksi-Nuia funeral home "Ööviiul". The vehicle was retired around 2000 or 2001. Later someone wanted to buy it, so the owner put it in tip-top condition. After that, however, the would-be buyer could no longer be reached and the rare vehicle stood idle for years. Even so, as far as Mr Jaak Sala, who donated this unique vehicle, remembers, it was used at about five funerals after its last overhaul.

About the model

Production years: 1967–1996 The JerAZ-762 van was based on GAZ-21/24 units and RAF know-how (its body is a RAF-977 converted into a van). It went into production in 1967, when the Yerevan Automobile Plant was given the documentation for the van version of the Riga plant's RAF-977, which had never reached series production. With few changes, the model stayed on the assembly line until the mid-1990s, in its last years also as flatbed and combi versions. Because of its poor build quality and durability, the vehicle was widely nicknamed "the Armenian people's revenge on the Soviet Union". Technical data: Engine GAZ-21 (ZMZ-24-01), inline-4, 2445 cc, 55 kW/75 hp Gearbox: GAZ-21, 3 speeds Dimensions (LxWxH): Payload: 1150 kg Gross weight: 2625 kg Top speed: 100–110 km/h
