The bus carries the route sign of former Narva city route no. 9
Story of the exhibit
The previous owner acquired the bus from the Keila Grain Combine. According to the emblem on the dashboard, before that it belonged to the Harju Construction Administration. After it was acquired, the bus was painted green (the original orange had faded). It ran mainly on school routes around Vaida, most recently in 2002. The engine was repaired before it was retired. It probably once had an automatic gearbox, as there are traces of one on the bus.
About the model
Production years: 1978–1993
A medium-sized rear-engined city and suburban bus.
The bus was developed in the mid-1970s and went into production in 1978. Despite the hopes, however, it did not replace the Lviv plant's main model, the LAZ-695N, because its design had several shortcomings. The KamAZ diesel engine was too new and complex for Soviet mechanics of the time, the three-speed automatic gearbox was not known for durability, the large size of the KamAZ engine meant no rear passenger door could be added, the rear hatch was too small, making engine access difficult, and the body frame proved too weak in service for the vibrations of the diesel engine. As a result relatively few LAZ-4202s were built, and in the mid-1980s the improved LAZ-42021 went into production, with a manual gearbox, a reinforced body structure and a redesigned rear with a larger engine hatch. The LAZ-69x series stayed in production alongside it; it should also be noted that the 42021 never became as widespread as its predecessor. At the end of the 1980s the LAZ-4207 touring coach, using 42021 technology, was also developed. Production of the LAZ-42021 in Lviv ended in 1993; over 15 years about 9000 LAZ 4202x-series buses left the Lviv plant. The model was replaced by the LAZ-5252 city bus, with a longer body and three side passenger doors.
Small numbers of LAZ-42021 buses came to Estonia in the second half of the 1980s and early 1990s; they were used both on scheduled routes and by various industrial and agricultural enterprises to transport workers.
