Story of the exhibit

A wheeled tractor used on a farm. This particular machine was converted from the excavator version, with the cab removed. The tractor was last used on a farm near Järva-Jaani and was retired after the owner's death. As standalone machines, YuMZ tractors were relatively rare in Estonia.

About the model

Production years: 1971–1979 A general-purpose row-crop tractor of the 1.4-tonne (14 kN) drawbar class. The first tractor designed by the Dnipropetrovsk plant's own engineers, developed in the early 1970s as a successor to the outdated MTZ-5LS (production of which had been taken over from the Minsk Tractor Plant in the early 1960s). Although the YuMZ-6L was also built and marketed under the "Belarus" brand, unlike its predecessor it was entirely the work of the Dnipropetrovsk plant's designers; practically the only parts it shares with the Minsk Tractor Plant's products of the same period are the wheels. Like its predecessor, the YuMZ-6 series was widely used as the base for small hydraulic wheeled excavators, built at several plants across the Soviet Union – in Kyiv, Galich, Borodianka and Saransk. Technical data: Engine type: 4-cylinder inline liquid-cooled diesel make: D-65 power: 60 hp/44 kW starting: with a pony engine overall dimensions L*W*H: 4095*1884*2460 mm (*) wheelbase: 2450 mm track front/rear: 1260...1860/1260...1860 mm weight: 2900 kg (without cab) (*) The height is given with the cab, which the machine at the Old Tech Park lacks. At the end of the 1970s the YuMZ-6L was replaced by the slightly modernised YuMZ-6AL, which can be distinguished from its predecessor by its square engine cover. In Estonia YuMZ wheeled tractors were relatively rare as standalone machines compared with MTZ tractors of the same class, but the excavator versions were common.

The foundations of the future tractor plant were laid in 1944, when it was decided to build the Dnipropetrovsk Automobile Plant. At first it was planned to build GAZ-51 trucks there, but later the ZiS-150 was chosen as the prototype instead, built in slightly modified form as the DAZ-150 from 1949…
