Story of the exhibit

Former divers' bus of the Jõgevamaa Rescue Service and the Jõgeva rescue department of the South Estonian Rescue Centre. In good condition and running order. The vehicle's technical passport and the plate of Ford's Belgian assembly plant give the year of manufacture as 1956. However, production of Ford D-series trucks only began in 1965, so it must be a conversion using the papers of some 1956 Ford; moreover, the D-series was not built at the Antwerp plant. The body was made in Finland by OY Veljekset Kulmala AB; it is a former fire engine from which the water tank, pump and other rescue equipment have been removed. As far as is known, it was converted into a divers' vehicle by staff of the Jõgevamaa Rescue Service. According to the Finnish gallery fireimages.net, the vehicle was probably built around 1975 and the model is probably a Ford Custom D0911. In the 2010s it was converted into a smoke sauna vehicle.

About the model

Production years: 1965–1981 A medium-duty truck series. The Ford D-series went into production in 1965 at the Langley plant in Britain (and later, for continental Europe, also in Amsterdam, the Netherlands), replacing the Ford Thames Trader. The new series was available in two- and three-axle versions, optionally with four-wheel drive, and with nine different wheelbases in total. Power came from four- and six-cylinder Ford diesels, and in the series flagship D1000 also Cummins and Perkins V8 diesels. Over 16 years more than half a million D-series Fords were built, and licences to build them were also sold to Spain (Ebro) and Korea (Hyundai). The series was succeeded in 1981 by the Ford Cargo.

Manufacturer

Ford Motor Company

Michigan, USA

Ford Motor do Brasil S.A. was founded on 24 April 1919 as a subsidiary of the US carmaker Ford Motor Company. In the early years Ford T-series cars and Ford TT-series trucks were imported from the USA as kits for assembly in Brazil. Brazilian Ford became a manufacturer rather than an assembly plant…
