Story of the exhibit

Former support/transport vehicle of the Tõrvandi rescue station, used mainly to remove vehicles involved in traffic accidents. It has stood for the last couple of years because of a rear axle fault. Compared with the original, the vehicle has been considerably modified – a more powerful B20 engine has been fitted, and several smaller parts come from Russian cars.

About the model

Production years: 1963–1970 A four-wheel-drive light truck with a forward-control body. In the early 1950s Volvo received an order from the Swedish army to design a light four-wheel-drive military vehicle. A pre-production batch of 90 L2304s was built in 1959–61, and the further development went into production in 1963 as the L3314-PU (soft-top pickup). It was powered by the 1.8-litre B18 petrol engine from the Volvo Amazon, while the running gear and frame were entirely original. Alongside the base model, special versions were also built, such as: - L3304 (open-bodied carrier for anti-tank equipment) - L3314-HT (hard-top combi van with a mechanical winch) - L3315 (hard-top combi van with a shielded 24 V electrical system) The series was popularly nicknamed "Laplander" and "Valp" (puppy); its official Swedish army designation was Personlastterrängbil 903 (Ltgbil 903). Besides the army, these vehicles were also valued by fire brigades, municipal utilities and electricians. Laplanders were built at Volvo's Gothenburg plants in the following numbers: * L3314: 7737 * L3315: 1116 * L3304: 367 In the second half of the 1970s the original "Laplander" was replaced by the Volvo C303 with a 6-cylinder engine and wider body; from 1977 to 1981 another 3222 Volvo C202s, a further development of the L3314 (modified appearance, more powerful B20 petrol engine), were built in Hungary.
