Story of the exhibit

Former tractor of the Matsalu collective farm in Lihula district; after being written off it was bought by Arved Valdna for farming at home in the early 1960s. It drove from there to Virtsu on its own wheels, about 50 km. It spent the next 40 years in private hands, shared with his son Värni Valdna. For a while the tractor was registered as property of the Virtsu volunteer fire brigade because of the restrictions on private ownership at the time. In 1999 the engine was repaired after the crankshaft broke. In 2005 the machine was retired when the water froze and damaged some engine parts. As there was less farmland and no interest in repairing the tractor, it was decided to hand the idle machine over to the Järva-Jaani Old Tech Park. Brought to the Old Tech Park from near Virtsu in Lääne County.

About the model

Production years: 1955–1958 The DT-14 was built at the Kharkiv Tractor Plant from 1956 (according to other sources as early as 1955). It was developed from the KhTZ-7, with the latter's petrol engine replaced by a diesel and a number of design changes made to the chassis. Compared with the KhTZ-7, the transmission, linkage and running gear were kept, except for the front axle. The DT-14 is a frameless general-purpose row-crop tractor with a reverser and a 14 hp diesel engine, used for various farm work. The transmission allows forward and reverse travel in four main gears, plus an additional forward-only creeper gear. Ground clearance (308 or 515 mm), wheelbase (1650, 1795, 1443 or 1857 mm) and track width (1000 to 1500 mm in 50 mm steps) can be changed to suit different working conditions. The tractor has a 3-point hydraulic linkage and a hitch. A belt pulley can be fitted to drive stationary machines and equipment. The tractor can be set up to work in reverse with various loaders, sweeps and similar equipment. The DT-14 has a single-cylinder four-stroke liquid-cooled D-14 diesel engine with 14 hp. The diesel is started on petrol at a reduced compression ratio, achieved by means of an auxiliary combustion chamber in the cylinder head. From May 1957 the plant built the DT-14A instead, whose D-14A diesel was still started on petrol, but now with an electric starter (the DT-14 engine was started by hand with a crank). From September 1957 until mid-1958 the plant built the DT-14B, whose D-14B diesel was started with an electric starter directly on diesel fuel, without petrol.
