Story of the exhibit

This small but powerful diesel tow tractor served at Ämari airfield in Estonia, where it was used to move aircrafts. Its compact size and tight turning circle made it well suited to cramped hangars and aprons. Exactly how it travelled from Germany to Ämari is not known – if you know anything about this machine, please let us know!

About the model

The Maschinenfabrik Esslingen DZ 10 and DZ 8 are West German diesel tow tractors built for towing work in factories, warehouses and airfields. They were known for their sturdy construction, smooth starts, excellent manoeuvrability in narrow factory lanes and low running costs. The German Luftwaffe used the DZ 10 to tow aircraft on airfields and in hangars. The two models differ in gearing: the DZ 10 is slower with greater pulling power, the DZ 8 faster with less pulling power. Both are powered by the Mercedes-Benz OM 636 diesel engine. Versions fitted with the Mercedes-Benz M 136 petrol engine were designated BZ 10 and BZ 8.
